Planeta.Com

Servas peace and travel association worldwide
True responsible travellers don't feel their holiday is worthwhile unless they meet local communities. It's true that this sometimes takes time, and guidebooks don't always point the traveller in the right direction. Travel is one of the most important aspects of Servas, an international, non-governmental, multicultural peace association run by volunteers in over 100 countries.
The Servas philosophy is founded on this Gandhi quotation: "With every true friendship we build the basis of world Peace". Servas is a way of building peace while travelling or hosting at home. A voluntary system of hosting gives participants the chance to make friends all over the world and live the every day life of another country. This system gives the traveller, as well as the host, the opportunity to learn more about local communities and the social issues affecting them; it opens up the possibility of a deeper relationship with the soul of a country.
Servas was established in 1949 by Bob Luitweiler as a peace movement. It is a non-profit organization working to build understanding, tolerance and world peace. After the Second World War many movements and philosophies bloomed. Today the situation in some countries is still difficult, with many in a state of war. Building peace and removing prejudice is as relevant today as at any time in the past.
Today Servas also has consultative status as a non-governmental organization with the UN Economic and Social Council.
To join this organization it is necessary to contact the country or the local representative that can be found on the international web site.
